What are the components of a work triangle?

Involves the kitchen sink, stove, and refrigerator

What is an important tip when managing the work triangle and traffic patterns in a kitchen?

Ensure the work triangle stays separate from the traffic patterns.

What is the ideal distance between any two components of a work triangle?

No less than 4 feet or more than 9 feet measured center to center.
Specifically:
Sink to range (five to six feet)
Sink to refrigerator (five to seven feet)
Range to refrigerator (five to nine feet)

A total no less than 15 feet or more than 22 feet

Tips for refrigerator/tall appliance placement in a kitchen?

1) Ensure refrigerator door swings out from the work triangle.
2) Leave as much uninterrupted counter space/prep space as possible and place refrigerators and other tall appliances at the end.

What are the ideal countertop space measurements for next to sink, refrigerator, and stovetop?

Sink: 30 inches on both sides.
Stove: 24 inches on both sides.
Refrigerator: 24 inches on open door side.

What are some types of venting systems?

1) Updraft systems: usually most common and least expensive especially if vent hood is located on outside wall.
2) Down-draft systems: Usually built into the cooktop and suck the air down into a duct system. Venting needs to be more powerful. Usually done in island cooktops.
3) Self-venting hoods: Used if you cannot vent outside due to construction of building or necessary location. hoods contain a fan that pulls in grease and smoke fumes, filters them, and then exhausts them back into the kitchen.

What are three advantages to separate cooktops?

1) Wide selection of finishes/materials
2) Easier to clean
3) More storage space below since they are only a few inches deep.

Tips for designing kitchens with wall ovens?

1) Ensure they make sense in relation to the work triangle
2) A wall oven door when open should be at the same level as the countertop or if a cook is shorter you can customize it to sit lower.
3) Side wall ovens are usually better than stacked ovens but this is usually the most common arrangement due to lack of space in kitchen.

What are the standard countertop dimensions? And what is a tip for customizing countertop height for client?

Height: 36 inches (floor to top surface).
Depth: 24 inches.
Thickness: 1½ inches.

Tip: Measure distance from floor to main cook's elbow height and calculate counter height by subtracting three inches from this measurement.

What are the disadvantages to plastic laminate?

1) Can look cheep
2) Scorches easily if high heat is applied
3) Not good for cutting
4) Laminate surfaces can only be a thin layer deep causing "scars" if knicked.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to ceramic tile on countertops?

Advantages: Heat resistant, come in an array of colors and designs, glazed tiles are non-porous, abrasion resistant, can be more easily replaced if damaged
Disadvantages: If something heavy is dropped on it, it may crack or shatter. Requires grout lines which may be hard to clean, and relatively expensive.

What is the standard height of hanging cabinets over countertops?

18" but can be customized based on cook. They also tend to be more shallow at 12-13" deep.

Define: Clerestories

pronounced, CLEAR-stories— are windows above eye level, generally near the ceiling.
